Our review - We paired this wine with wild caught Steelhead trout topped with organic sundried tomatoes, wild capers, olives, lemon, and garlic sauteed in olive oil and finished with fresh parsley. This pairing was pleasing to the palate pronouncing the lively acidity, subtle spices, heartiness, and cedary scent. A very enjoyable wine, at a very affordable price!

Mendocino Farms 2004 Redvine Series - Organic, Biodynamic

Winemaker's notes - The name of this proprietary blend comes from the soil type common to the two source vineyards, Heart Arrow and Fairbairn Ranches, set along the upper Russian River watershed in Mendocino County, California. Both of these ranches are Demeter certified Biodynamic.

The 2004 Redvine Series consists of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Petite Sirah, and 10% Syrah. Each vineyard block is hand-harvested. The Grapes were fermented, barrel-aged separately in select French oak for 14 months and then blended prior to bottling. The Cabernet Sauvignon provides rich ﬂavors of black cherry, plum and important tannin materials that are softened by the addition of Syrah. The Petite Syrah adds ripe black fruits, density and is highlighted by all three varietal contributions to its complex aromatic structure.

Our review - Don't be fooled by the low-key label, this wine really stands out. It features distinct notes of black cherry and plum along with a subtle spiciness as its dark garnet color conjures. It is a very smooth, drinkable, food-friendly wine that pairs well with many plates.

Old River Cellars 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon, Ponderosa Vineyard - Organic

Winemaker's notes - This medium bodied Cabernet Sauvignon is produced of grapes from the Ponderosa Vineyard located at 1900 foot elevation along the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The high elevation vineyard site yields fruit with unique tannin and ﬂavor proﬁles that contribute to compelling notes of dark fruits and earth in this well balanced wine.

The 2005 Cabernet is comprised of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon and 24% Cabernet Franc and is barrel aged in high quality new French oak barrels for 8 months prior to blending and bottling to provide a well-structured complex pallet.

Produced from Organically Grown Grapes of the Ponderosa Vineyard, certified Organic by CCOF since 1994.

Our review - This wine is truly a gem, deep ruby in color, it's harmonious, bright & lively with a lovely linger. The pleasing aromas have a hint of toasty vanilla oak. But be forewarned, you'll barrel through this bottle before you know it - it's that good!

Medicinal Benefits: Aborigines have been using it for centuries to treat a variety of ailments. Tea Tree Oil is a natural antibacterial, antifungal, antiseptic, and detoxifying agent. Tea tree oil is purported to have antiseptic properties and has been used traditionally to prevent and treat infections.
Milestone: In 1923, A.R. Penfold conducted a study of tea tree and found that it was a powerful antiseptic.
Fun Fact: The Australian military issued tea tree oil in the first-aid kits of soldiers during World War II.
Aroma: Warm, spicy, medicinal and volatile. It is occasionally used to scent spicy colognes and aftershaves.
Aromatherapy Benefits: Cleansing, purifying, uplifting. Tea tree oil is used in a variety of body care products including soap, shampoo, toothpaste, lip balm, topical cream, and essential oil.

HOUSEHOLD USES

Mold Killer: In a spray bottle, combine 2 teaspoons tea tree oil and 2 cups water. Shake to mix. Spray on mold. No need to rinse off.

Diaper Pail Cleaner: Spray diaper container with tea tree oil and water mixture.

SKINCARE USES

Acne: Tea Tree Oil is the perfect product for people with oily or troubled skin. Its natural antibacterial properties help soothe acne break outs without drying skin. Apply 1 drop to a cotton ball moistened with water and apply to break out. Tea tree oil may reduce the number of inflamed and non-inflamed lesions.
Insect Bites: Tea Tree Oil can help soothe insect bites. Apply a few drops to a wet cotton ball and apply to bites. Tea Tree Oil is also excellent to soothe minor burns, scrapes, and insect bites.
Athlete's Foot (tinea pedis): Apply a few drops to a wet cotton ball and apply to affected nail. You can also place a drop in a water bath to soak affected feet.
Dandruff: Effective in improving the conditions associated with dandruff and can reduce flaking and itching.
Allergic Skin Reactions: Early small studies show that tea tree oil applied to the skin may reduce histamine-induced inflammation.

RECIPES

Mouth Freshening Gargle

Ingredients

2 drops peppermint essential oil
1 drop myrrh essential oil
1 drop tea tree oil

Directions: Blend with a small amount of milk (rice, soy, dairy, hemp, almond, etc.) gargle or swish in the mouth for approximately 60 seconds several times each day. Continue as necessary. Water is o.k., but the fat in the milk acts as a buffer and effectively distributes the oils. Take care not to swallow.

Purification - Combat body aches, chills and congestion with a soak in this preventative eucalyptus and tea tree blend. These powerful anti-microbial oils will cleanse and open breathing.

Ingredients

14 drops eucalyptus essential oil
8 drops tea tree essential oil
14 drops grapefruit essential oil
dead sea salt
optional: sprinkle 1 or 2 tablespoons of finely ground rolled oats into the bath to soften the skin and relieve irritation and itchiness.

Disinfecting Floor Cleaner

Ingredients

1 ounce liquid castile soap
10 drops lemon essential oil
4 drops tea tree essential oil

Directions - Combine all ingredients in a 1-gallon bucket of warm water.

Disinfecting Toilet Bowl Cleanser - Utilize the cleaning and disinfecting benefits of essential oils and enjoy a pure aromatherapy experience.

15 Uses for Organic Jojoba Oil

Jojoba is a perennial woody shrub native to southern Arizona, southern California and northwestern Mexico. Native Americans extracted the oil from Jojoba seeds to treat wounds and also used the oil as a skin and hair moisturizer. Many of the beneficial properties of Jojoba come from the fact that it matches the molecular structure of hair and skin sebum. As a result, Jojoba is able to quickly penetrate the skin and scalp without leaving an oily residue.

There is no need to spend hundreds of dollars on products to reduce lines, smooth frizzy hair or remove makeup. Jojoba Oil is simple, natural, and has so many uses and benefits.

1. Eye Makeup/ Face Makeup Remover - Add a few drops to fingers or to a cotton ball and wipe over eyes and face. Rinse off with water or follow with regular cleanser.

2. Facial Cleanser for Normal to Dry Skin - Add a few drops to fingers or cotton ball. Cleanse face. Remove with water.

3. Facial Moisturizer - Cleanse face. Apply a few drops to fingers and then pat onto damp skin.

12. Lip Conditioner - Apply to finger and smooth onto lips. Great as an overnight treatment as well.

13. Cuticle Oil - Apply a few drops to rough, dry cuticles at least once per day.

14. Shave Prep - Apply to your beard or desired area beneath your shaving product. Helps prevent razor burn and leaves skin smooth and soft.

15. Aftershave Moisturizer - Apply directly after shaving to soothe and moisturize skin.

If you want natural products, you have to be willing to search them out. Learn to read labels, and refuse to settle for half-natural hair and skin care. Below I've listed and described the "ten most wanted"- the ten chemicals I most want to see off the labels of so-called natural hair and skin care products.

1. Methyl, Propyl, Butyl and Ethyl Paraben - Used as inhibitors of microbial growth and to extend shelf life of products. Have caused many allergic reactions and skin rashes. Studies have shown that they are weakly estrogenic and can be absorbed by the body through the skin. Widely used even though they are known to be toxic.

2. Diethanolamine (DEA), Triethanolamine (TEA) - Often used in cosmetics as emulsifiers and/or foaming agents. They can cause allergic reactions, eye irritation and dryness of hair and skin. DEA and TEA are "amines" (ammonia compounds) and can form cancer-causing nitrosamines when they come in contact with nitrates. Toxic if absorbed into the body over a long period of time.

3. Diazolidinyl Urea, Imidazolidinyl Urea - These are widely used preservatives. The American Academy of Dermatology has found them to be a primary cause of contact dermatitis. Two trade names for these chemicals are Germall II and Germall 115. Neither of the Germall chemicals contains a good antifungal agent, and they must be combined with other preservatives. Both these chemicals release formaldehyde, which can be toxic.

4. Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate (SLS) - A cheap, harsh detergent used in shampoos for its cleansing and foam-building properties. Often derived from petroleum, it is frequently disguised in pseudo-natural cosmetics with the phrase "comes from coconuts." It causes eye irritation, scalp scurf similar to dandruff, skin rashes and other allergic reactions.

5. Petrolatum - Also known as petroleum jelly, this mineral oil derivative is used for its emollient properties in cosmetics. It has no nutrient value for the skin and can interfere with the body's own natural moisturizing mechanism, leading to dryness and chapping. It often creates the very conditions it claims to alleviate. Manufacturers use petrolatum because it is unbelievably cheap.

6. Propylene Glycol - Ideally this is a vegetable glycerin mixed with grain alcohol, both of which are natural. Usually it is a synthetic petrochemical mix used as a humectant. It has been known to cause allergic reactions, hives and eczema. When you see PEG (polyethylene glycol) or PPG (polypropylene glycol) on labels, beware-these are related synthetics.

7. PVP/VA Copolymer - A petroleum-derived chemical used in hairsprays, styling aids and other cosmetics. It can be considered toxic, since inhaled particles can damage the lungs of sensitive persons.

8. Stearalkonium Chloride - A quaternary ammonium compound used in hair conditioners and creams. Developed by the fabric industry as a fabric softener, it is a lot cheaper and easier to use in hair conditioning formulas than proteins or herbals, which are beneficial to the hair. Causes allergic reactions. Toxic.

9. Synthetic Colors - Used to make cosmetics "pretty," synthetic colors, along with synthetic hair dyes, should be avoided at all costs. They will be labeled as FD&C or D&C, followed by a color and a number. Example: FD&C Red No. 6 / D&C Green No. 6. Many synthetic colors can be carcinogenic. If a cosmetic contains them, don't use it.

10. Synthetic Fragrances - The synthetic fragrances used in cosmetics can have as many as 200 ingredients. There is no way to know what the chemicals are, since on the label it will simply read "fragrance." Some problems caused by these chemicals include headaches, dizziness, rash, hyperpigmentation, violent coughing, vomiting, skin irritation-the list goes on. Advice: Don't buy a cosmetic that has the word "fragrance" on the ingredients label.

Organic Quinoa with Caramelized Onions, Roasted Cauliflower & Parsnips

Ingredients:

1 tbs. balsamic vinegar (for the onions)
6 tbs. olive oil (2 for the parsnips, 2 for the onions, 2 for the cauliflower)
1 large Vidalia or other sweet onion, thinly sliced
3 large parsnips, peeled and diced
1 head of cauliflower, cut into small florets
5 cloves of garlic, chopped (2 cloves for the parsnips, 3 cloves for the cauliflower)
1 cup of raw quinoa (cook as per package directions)
2 tbs. finely chopped fresh parsley
Kosher salt
freshly ground black pepper

Preparation:

Preheat oven to 425°F.

Caramelized Onions: Toss onions with oil & balsamic vinegar in a bowl. Separate slices and spread evenly in a heavy skillet or cast iron pan, cook on medium heat stirring occasionally until browned, 25 to 30 minutes.

Roasted Parsnips: Toss parsnips with oil, garlic, salt and pepper in a bowl. Spread evenly in a shallow baking pan and place on middle rack. Stir occasionally, until browned and soft, 20 minutes.

Roasted Cauliflower: Toss cauliflower with oil, garlic, salt and pepper in a bowl. Spread evenly in a shallow baking pan and place on middle rack. Stir occasionally, until golden, 25 to 30 minutes.

Prepare quinoa according to package directions.

Toss all finished ingredients together with fresh parsley, plate & enjoy.

Crispy Kale Curly Chips Recipe

Replace greasy fried, potato chips with delicious roasted kale chips, they have the crisp & crunch of potato chips except they melt in your mouth. And, it's incredibly healthy, too!

Prep Time: 5 minutes, Cook Time: 20 minutes

Ingredients:

1 head cleaned & chopped fresh organic green curly kale, woody center stems removed
2 Tbsp. organic olive oil
Pinch of kosher salt or sea salt

Preparation:

Place a rack on the lowest shelf of your oven. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Spread kale out in a single layer on a baking sheet. Drizzle with olive oil, toss to coat completely. Sprinkle with salt.
Place on the lowest rack of the oven and bake for 10 minutes.
Remove from oven and stir so that kale can get crispy all over.
Bake another 8 to 12 minutes or until kale is crispy. It should be just lightly browned and crispy to the touch. If kale still bends, rather than crackles, when you touch it, it isn't done yet. Return it to the oven. Turn down the heat if it is getting too brown. Continue cooking until crispy. Be sure not to over cook.
Remove from oven, plate and serve immediately.

Can be stored in a paper bag for up to 2-3 days. Enjoy!
